It was sad but not surprising that the House Federal and State Affairs Committee approved a bill Thursday that would allow a one-year moratorium on refugee resettlements in Kansas communities. An earlier hearing on the bill was marked by fear-mongering rhetoric. Not only are the proposed restrictions unlikely to survive a court challenge – a federal judge issued a preliminary injunction last week on a refugee ban in Indiana – they send an ugly message about our state and its values. Don’t let exaggerated fears cloud our compassion. – Phillip Brownlee
