Sullivan outlines possible responses to school ruling

State budget director Shawn Sullivan has outlined possible responses to the Kansas Supreme Court’s recent ruling that school funding is inequitable. Speaking at a town hall meeting in Olathe last weekend, Sullivan said that options include defying the court, rewriting the state’s financing formula or making changes without spending more state dollars, the Topeka Capital-Journal reported. Each option has legal, budgetary or political complications. The Eagle reported Thursday that the Wichita school district and its taxpayers would receive $10.1 million in additional aid if the state restored its old equalization formula – the most straightforward response to the court ruling. – Phillip Brownlee
