Other GOP presidential candidates have been criticizing the campaign tactics of Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas. That has resulted in new attention on Cruz’s campaign manager, Jeff Roe, and a tragic episode in Missouri politics. Roe, who already had a reputation in Missouri for down-and-dirty campaigning, was behind a political ad last February that mocked the appearance of Tom Schweich, a GOP primary candidate for Missouri governor. Schweich committed suicide a few days after the ad aired. The death caused much finger-pointing and soul-searching about what politics had become, but it didn’t seem to do lasting harm to Roe’s career. Apparently winning is still all that maters. – Phillip Brownlee
