Groups object to proof-of-citizenship change

The League of Women Voters filed a lawsuit last week arguing that Brian Newby, executive director of the U.S. Election Assistance Commission, illegally granted Kansas, Georgia and Alabama permission to change federal voter-registration forms to require proof of citizenship. More than 30 advocacy groups, including the NAACP, also have objected. They wrote a letter to Newby last week saying that his action ran afoul of EAC policy and procedure and was inconsistent with recent court cases. They also argued that Newby – who, as Johnson County’s former election commissioner, has ties to Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach – acted without the approval of EAC commissioners and without providing public notice. – Phillip Brownlee
