After being chosen as the new chairman of the Sedgwick County Commission, Jim Howell said he wanted to bring “some image-building to the county and some relationship-building with our partners.” He’s off to a good start. Howell cast the deciding vote last week to fully fund the Greater Wichita Partnership, which is central to the community’s economic development efforts. Howell also proposed that the commission hold some of its meetings in the evenings in commission districts, rather than always at 9 a.m. Wednesdays at the Sedgwick County Courthouse downtown. Though there are concerns about being able to televise and live-stream the meetings, Howell’s desire to increase community engagement is admirable. – Phillip Brownlee
