Working poor caught in insurance gap

As many as 5 million Americans are working but don’t qualify for either employer-provided insurance, Medicaid or subsidies for the federal health insurance marketplace, USA Today reported. Most of them work for employers – typically in food service, construction or retail sales – that classify them as part-time workers or independent contractors to avoid having to provide health care benefits. They also live in one of the 20 states, including Kansas, that refuse to allow a federal expansion of Medicaid. – Phillip Brownlee
