Reflecting on what German immigrants faced in Kansas during World War I, Garden City High School social studies teacher David Duran asked Rep. Tim Huelskamp, R-Fowler/Hutchinson, at a Monday town hall: “When we talk about xenophobia and that kind of racism being wrong then, and I have students who are asking questions about how people respond to them now because they’re Muslim now, what should I tell them?” Though Huelskamp mentioned that he has four adopted children and is “very sensitive about the ideas of racism,” his answer to Duran, as reported by the Garden City Telegram, was mostly true to his party’s fearmongering line these days, including: “You should not be able to come to this country if you profess to believe in Shariah law because that would trump the Constitution.” “At the heart of Islam is the idea that there is no religious tolerance.” And “we can’t use our religious tolerance against us by allowing people in here who want to take away religious liberties.” – Rhonda Holman
