Pompeo suggests military could disobey a Gitmo order

Rep. Mike Pompeo, R-Wichita, said his intention in sending a letter last month urging the Joint Chiefs of Staff to seek legal advice before following any executive order to transfer Guantanamo Bay detainees to the United States (a move Pompeo considers illegal) was “not to put pressure” on members of the military. However, he told conservative radio host Frank Gaffney that he hoped those in the military understood that there are “members of Congress who have their back in the event that they choose to make a decision that comports with their duty.” That didn’t sit well with commentator Charles Pierce, who wrote for Esquire magazine that anybody who attempts to disrupt the relationship between the military and the commander in chief is “playing with a blowtorch in a powder magazine.” – Phillip Brownlee
