Goddard superintendent Justin Henry spoke this week to a legislative committee in the early stages of developing a new school finance formula. He shared some of the challenges that school workers face each day, such as a student struggling to cope with parents who have substance-abuse problems, the Topeka Capital-Journal reported. “There are kids and there are parents and there are families with great needs,” Henry said. Superintendents were allotted 10 minutes each to testify, while former Kansas State Board of Education member and school-spending critic Walt Chappell of Wichita was allowed 45 minutes. Chappell’s recommendations included consolidating and rearranging districts and possibly eliminating funding for sports. – Phillip Brownlee
