Kansas Sens. Pat Roberts and Jerry Moran have long championed the normalization of U.S. trade relations with Cuba. So it was good that they didn’t let their animus toward President Obama keep them from supporting his call for lifting the trade embargo. “I would like to sell Cuba wheat products and, for that matter, all sorts of agriculture products,” Roberts said, noting that it is past time for the failed policy to end. Moran, who already has asked the U.S. Treasury Department to loosen restrictions on exporting wheat to Cuba, noted that Cuba now buys wheat from other countries. “It simply does not make sense to continue policies and regulations blocking U.S. farmers from this market only for it to be filled by our competitors,” Moran said. The rest of the Kansas congressional delegation should join Moran and Roberts in working to lift the embargo. – Phillip Brownlee
