Voters, not governors, should pick county commissioners

Though Gov. Sam Brownback went wrong in refusing to release the names of applicants for two new seats on the Saline County Commission, he made a useful proposal to take such decision making out of governors’ hands in the future. “The people of Saline County voted for this expansion of the County Commission and they should have had the right to select its new members through the electoral process. I believe this statute should be changed to allow the local community to choose its representatives,” Brownback said in a statement, as he named his choices for the jobs. The new commissioners will be up for election in two years, but local voters ought to fill such county vacancies from the start. – Rhonda Holman
