Did Roberts change Cruz’s mind on crop insurance?

Did Sen. Pat Roberts, R-Kan., motivate Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, to change his mind early this month about a $3 billion cut to federal crop insurance – perhaps by reminding him of what matters to Iowa caucus voters? After voting against restoring the crop insurance, Politico reported, “Cruz was immediately collared by Senate Agriculture Committee Chairman Pat Roberts (R-Kan.), and the two talked for a minute or so as Cruz listened intently. He turned to Republican Secretary of the Senate Laura Dove and gave the ‘just a minute’ signal before walking to the cloakroom. Two minutes later, Cruz approached the clerk and changed his vote.” The switch prompted a New Hampshire editorial headlined “Crop flop: Cruz panders to King Corn.” – Rhonda Holman
