Community needs to stay engaged in chief hiring

Wichitans can hope the unexpectedly long search for a police chief is nearly over. City Manager Robert Layton announced two finalists Friday whose credentials check a lot of boxes on Wichita’s wish list, including Layton’s own preference for someone with a fresh perspective. It’s a concern that both men – Duluth, Minn., Police Chief Gordon Ramsay and Irving, Texas, Assistant Police Chief Jeff Spivey – come from smaller departments. A lot will depend on how they do in interviews and a public forum at 6 p.m. Dec. 14 at Century II. The community’s level of engagement needs to stay strong through the hiring process and beyond. – Rhonda Holman
