Do county officials need and merit $4,800 perk?

If the Sedgwick County Commission gives its approval Wednesday, County Manager Michael Scholes could newly grant and oversee car allowances for officials such as County Clerk Kelly Arnold, County Treasurer Linda Kizzire, Register of Deeds Bill Meek and Election Commissioner Tabitha Lehman. That may seem fair, as all five county commissioners and several other county officials already have car allowances. And the allowances still would have to go through the annual budgeting process. But the proposal should not have been tucked into the consent agenda at Wednesday’s commission meeting, where it might have been passed without notice if not for an Eagle story. Do these elected officials need and merit a perk worth up to $4,800 a year? That’s questionable, and worthy of full public debate. – Rhonda Holman
