Opinion Line (Dec. 21)

Respect for law has reached a new low when Wichita government supports allowing illegal immigrants to drive legally.

Shouldn’t the mayor and three other City Council members be accountable for the illegal immigrants’ actions if they want to give them drivers’ permits? Under the law, it’s illegal for them to hold a job to pay for insurance.

Regarding the comment that “no government employee should ever receive a bonus”: This is probably someone who wonders why government always seems to get less qualified people than private industry. And I hope that reader excludes the military employees who protect the right to make that comment freely and publicly.

The bonus was a way for the Legislature to pacify the employees who have not seen any pay increases in years. Employees have paid a hefty price for budget problems of the state for a long time.

I wish people would stop saying the governor is incompetent. The state budget crisis is going according to plan.

When I hear Gov. Sam Brownback say, “It’s Obama’s fault I was even elected,” then I’ll know we’re gettin’ somewhere.

It’s interesting how when Republicans talk about Democratic presidents they talk about who was the worst president, but when Democrats talk about Republican presidents they talk about who was the biggest criminal.

I just love Pope Francis. Can we make him president of the world?

We lost 60,000 lives in Vietnam, but have had normal relations with the country since the late 1990s. Our vendetta against Cuba should have been over at least 25 years ago.

Talking to Cuba through diplomats makes perfect sense. Supporting the Cubans with banking and tourism does not yet. They still lead terrorism and brutality in South America and the Caribbean area.

We trade with all kinds of countries with shady human rights records, China being the worst. No one is suggesting we embargo China. Yet folks are screaming “no diplomatic ties with Cuba” because of its record. It’s time to get in there and give the ordinary Cuban a chance.

I am really sick of people knocking law enforcement. If people would just follow the Ten Commandments and the Golden Rule, we wouldn’t even need police. Don’t kill, don’t steal, etc. Treat others the way you want to be treated.

When the good law enforcement people quit their jobs because of lack of respect and appreciation, only the undesirable and bullies will take the jobs. Is that really what you want?

Black lives matter. Policemen’s lives matter, too.

Two years after the horrific events at Sandy Hook Elementary, the only response from the American people is to do nothing. Apparently this is an acceptable price to pay.

More than 140 students and teachers shot and killed in a foreign land, and the blame is placed on terrorists. The same thing happening in our country would be blamed on guns. Go figure.
