A special legislative committee wisely didn’t recommend a bill last week that would prohibit Kansans from serving on local school boards if they had even a remote conflict of interest. House Bill 2345 was so extreme that it would prohibit people from being on a school board if they had a relative who worked for any district in Kansas, even if it was hundreds of miles away. Rep. Mark Kahrs, R-Wichita, moved that the committee not make a recommendation on the bill, calling the restrictions “overly broad.” Rep. John Whitmer, R-Wichita, seconded it, preferring that the matter be left to local voters. – Phillip Brownlee
