Only disabled vets should park free at airport

The Wichita City Council agenda item on Eisenhower National Airport’s VIP parking was pulled from Tuesday’s agenda. But whenever the issue returns, the council should heed the city manager and Airport Advisory Board and eliminate the 113 passes as of Dec. 31, while complying with a new state law extending free airport parking to qualified disabled veterans. The ill-advised parking perk for some government officials and business leaders has been in place for decades. But as a city document notes: “With the opening of new customer parking facilities that are financed by users of the airport, it is essential that parking revenues be maximized, and that there be no exceptions unless required by law.” – Rhonda Holman
