Opinion Line Extra (Nov. 2)

In light of the recent disaster at Oklahoma State University, it’s time we enact new car-control laws. Let’s get rid of semi-automatic transmissions and large-capacity gas tanks. We should also consider mandatory background checks and a three-day waiting period on car purchases.

Liberals say they don’t want to ban all guns, just pass “commonsense” laws. But it never ends. When the District of Columbia had a complete handgun ban, liberals there still wanted more gun control. Give them an inch and they’ll take a mile.

There are four amendments to the U.S. Constitution protecting voting rights but only one protecting gun rights, yet right-wingers clamor for fewer restrictions on the ability to purchase a gun and more restrictions on those wishing to vote.

“Voter fraud” in Kansas is almost as bad as “weapons of mass destruction.” Must we suffer Kris Kobach’s waste and suppression of voters’ rights?

Regarding “Course on voter registration proposed” (Oct. 25 Local & State): Will we be seeing an economics course on the proper use of toilet paper next? College students are adults. Quit mollycoddling this generation and let them make their own choices. Maybe they don’t want to vote.

A course to teach college students how to register to vote? A person not smart enough to figure out how to navigate a voter registration form is not college material, and definitely should not vote. That’s how you end up with an Obama in the White House.

The U.S. is a market economy. If wages grow, and the population has more money to spend, consumption grows, companies grow, jobs grow and wages grow.

Why do others have a claim on my labor – aka money, really my life – when they didn’t pay attention in school, didn’t graduate from high school, got pregnant before marriage or stole into this country illegally?

While a letter writer who was a teenage mother and worked hard in a minimum-wage job might not want the government to support others, she should realize that she received government support in the form of a minimum wage and an income tax system that mostly exempts the poor.

You’ve got to love how rich politicians want to raise retirement age, yet not a word about raising the maximum taxable Social Security income wage.

I love the idea to make insurance companies nonprofit. Another option would be to make them mutual companies. Eliminate the huge CEO salaries and bonuses. No stockholders, no ridiculous TV commercials, and no newspaper advertising. And profits would have to be reinvested in the company to keep premiums low.
