Opinion Line (Nov. 18)

Some seem to think that the Republicans, now controlling both houses of Congress, will push through a bunch of new laws. That’s not how it works. They have a majority, but not enough to override a presidential veto. They’ll pass laws the president will veto. Nothing will change.

Remember when a South Carolina backbencher congressman named Joe Wilson yelled “You lie!” at the president? Events on the Internet this last week proved that our government lies to us. Maybe that is why our government is trying to control the Internet.

Please stop saying that there are 22,000 disenfranchised voters in Kansas. Obviously those 22,000 either cannot prove their citizenship or don’t want to vote. Let’s talk about the 48 percent who could but didn’t bother to vote.

Next election, how about letting us vote on a sales tax reduction?

Regarding “Lawmakers divided on how to plug budget hole” (Nov. 16 Eagle): Why not just suspend the paychecks to the legislators and governor until they get us out of this mess? Raising taxes is not enough.

If the government can’t create jobs, as suggested by Kansas House Speaker Ray Merrick, let’s close McConnell Air Force Base, Forbes Field and Fort Riley, and see what happens.

I’m self-employed and earn six figures. I couldn’t vote for Brownback because I don’t support forced upward redistribution of wealth. But if you’re gullible enough to hand me free money I didn’t ask for, I’ll take it. Last year I got some great furniture. This year it’s a European vacation.

The state of Kansas owes me a nice little refund on my state income tax. Please send it to me before the money is all gone.

Oh, do elections have consequences. Kansas better prepare herself for some serious consequences.

The election shows that a majority of Kansans just want to yell when the football goes across the goal line. They don’t care that the governor and Legislature are controlled by superrich Wichita libertarians who will shove their agenda down our throats.

Since the election, my subscription to The Eagle is priceless. The doomsday letters to the editor and comments in the Opinion Line keep me laughing all day.

Come on, folks – the election’s over. Let’s quit the whining and the gloating and get down to work helping these clowns we re-elected govern.

Did anyone else think the NASCAR Homestead race seemed more orchestrated than competed?
