A record-low 36 percent of Americans have a favorable opinion of the Democratic Party, down 6 percentage points from before the midterm elections, according to a new Gallup poll. The Republican Party’s favorability rating is 42 percent. That’s not great either, but it’s the first time since September 2011 that the GOP has had a higher favorability rating than the Democratic Party. Republican ratings have climbed steadily since the 2013 federal government shutdown, when only 28 percent of Americans rated the GOP favorably. The high point for the Democratic Party in recent years was after President Obama was re-elected in 2012, when it had a 51 percent favorability rating. – Phillip Brownlee
