Even many socially conservative Republicans are conceding that there’s no going back on same-sex marriage after the U.S. Supreme Court’s June 26 decision and the courts’ intervention against Kentucky county clerk Kim Davis’ refusal to issue licenses. But when interviewed at the recent Values Voter Summit, Gov. Sam Brownback said “it is not over,” likening it to the four-decade “life fight” since Roe v. Wade: “I believe life begins at conception and should be protected. I think now, you’re going where, there’s going to be a long battle on the issue of marriage.” But where would a “long battle” lead, especially as more same-sex couples marry legally every day? – Rhonda Holman
