Fun park replaces a scar along Douglas

The ICT Pop-Up Urban Park at 121 E. Douglas may not strike passers-by as remarkable, and that’s fine. What matters is that what used to be there is gone. The huge, nasty-looking hole in the ground long scarred Wichita’s main downtown thoroughfare, contradicting other strong evidence that the city center was finally getting its act together. Now, thanks to $150,000 from the Knight Foundation Fund administered through the Wichita Community Foundation, the space has been filled in and accessorized with seating, tables, artworks, lights and a pingpong table, and will regularly welcome food trucks. This is a fun, productive way to await future development at this prime site. – Rhonda Holman
