After sending out several e-mail newsletters that mocked and criticized school districts, the Governor’s Office shifted focus last week and blasted government-assistance programs and their supporters. “One of the central missions of the left in America is to increase the number of Americans who are dependent on the government,” wrote Melika Willoughby, Gov. Sam Brownback’s deputy director of communications. “This growing dependency is necessary to justify the big government and high tax policies they support.” Seriously? Willoughby also used offensive imagery, likening government assistance to “confining shackles.” As Sen. David Haley, D-Kansas City, noted, such rhetoric misrepresents the nature of poverty and is in sharp contrast with Pope Francis’ message to Congress last week about caring for others. – Phillip Brownlee
