Opinion Line (Sept. 29)

With the rhetoric coming out of the halls of Congress since the pope’s address, it is obvious that many members had activated their truth filters.

What a hoax that “supermoon” was. I stood out there with my neighbor for two hours and there was never a total eclipse of the moon. Sure, get us all excited and then it doesn’t happen. Who is in charge of these things? Obama or Brownback? Or the pope, maybe?

Rep. Mike Pompeo would make a great House speaker.

I deeply appreciate the service of former Sens. Bob Dole and Nancy Kassebaum Baker, but this is no longer your grandfather’s Republican Party. Their righteous indignation would be better served if it were directed at the leftist in the White House.

Kris Kobach is admired by old white people while 40 percent of those on his suspended voter list are under age 30 and diverse. A Harvard researcher warns that Wichita’s death spiral is fed by an unwelcoming environment for young talent. Hmm.

Sunday’s article about Wichita losing startup businesses was dead-on. Wichita needs to get with the times, stir things up a bit, and quit this closed-minded thinking. No one wants to come here because we support nothing and those at the top wear blinders and want no change.

I see that Westar Energy got five to seven bucks more a month instead of $12 or whatever it asked for. Never fear – it will be back in 90 days demanding more.

WSU’s fall 2015 enrollment dropped more than any other public university in Kansas. That’s what unabated increases in tuition, fees, and room and board will do to you. The continual degradation of close parking options sure doesn’t help. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure this out.

Wichita State has 14,495 students and Fort Hays State has 14,210. WSU should be very embarrassed. It spent $2 million to increase enrollment, and FHSU is about to pass it to become the state’s No. 3 university. And I guarantee FHSU would beat WSU in football.

Why are downtown streets barricaded for some event or another every weekend? It would be nice to be able to travel through downtown Wichita if you needed to get somewhere on a weekend.

The stupid restriping of First Street about got me mowed over. Idiots in the left-turn lane don’t turn left, so you have two vehicles merging into one lane. And why does it take one-third of the street for a bike lane?

The NFL is second only to reality TV for boredom.
