Though opponents had a point about the wisdom of trying to strengthen and stabilize Wichita Transit with a sales tax that would sunset in five years, that funding strategy was better than the alternative – a stripped-down bus service that ill-serves the low-income workers and people with disabilities who need it most. Wichita Transit’s skilled director, Steve Spade, will be looked to for strong guidance going forward. Even though the sales tax was defeated, as Mayor Carl Brewer said Wednesday, the city must serve those who rely on public transit. – Rhonda Holman
