Opinion Line Extra (Sept. 25)

It’s odd how the GOP screams about giving poor people food stamps but has no problem giving oil companies $38 billion or Wall Street banks $70 billion in subsidies.

We actually pay into the Social Security system. We, and our employers, actually pay into unemployment benefits. That is not socialism. Moochers who do neither of these things but expect others to foot their bill in life abuse the rest of us through their unearned entitlements. That is socialism.

The government-run retirement fund called Social Security may be socialistic, but I was forced by the government to pay into it all my working life and that small check I get monthly is nothing more than them paying me a pittance compared with what I originally paid them.

If the pope can arrive in a Fiat, why can our senators and congressmen not do the same?

I am sure glad the pope is in the U.S. so I have something to watch on TV.

Voters need to always keep in mind whether a candidate will vote for giving the people more freedom, or less. Too often, politicians pass laws taking freedoms away from people. I thought this was America. Pay attention to your candidate on that point.

If Terri Moses didn’t have the right “skill set,” then why was she one of two finalists for police chief? And the city wonders why we don’t trust its leadership decisions.

The two best things about McDonald’s are the french fries and the restrooms.
