Opinion Line (Sept. 24)
Wichita’s decision to start the selection over for a police chief is a waste of time. The city manager was not here the last time we invited an outsider to be chief. It’s a slap in the face to think the department can’t find a qualified chief within the ranks.
How discouraging for the dedicated and skilled police officers in Wichita to be told they need not apply for the top position. They have essentially been told no one on the force now is good enough to be police chief.
The city manager recognized what had been apparent since the first candidate dropped out and the second made clear Wichita was not his first choice, leaving only one whose resume was weak for chief. The contractor did a marginal job, so the only choice was a do-over.
Was Terri Moses a token candidate from the beginning? This seems cruel and dishonest to me.
The fiasco that became the search for a new police chief makes Wichita look not only weak-minded but indeed weak-kneed in its dealings with special interest groups.
At some point mankind will see the basic immorality of the profit motive, just as it did with slavery and, on good days, war.
Scott Walker is a fine gentleman. Richard Trumka is a national disgrace.
What’s good about the big Republican field is that Democrats will celebrate each time one goes down. Cheers for Scott Walker, the teacher-hating, union-killing tyrant. Now if we can just find the pickle he is sucking on and fix that face.
One thing most Americans like about both Ben Carson and Donald Trump is that they say not only what is true but what most Americans believe to be true.
The Constitution says there should be no religious test for the presidency. But when it was written, there was no ISIS cutting off the heads of Christians, no planes flying into our buildings, no threats of “death to America.” That is what Carson meant.
In Monday’s mail I got a request to send money to stop “the president’s revenge on Israel.” Last week I received a request in the mail to stop the president’s dangerous “liaison” with Israel. Gosh, whom should I send the money to?
The idea that Kansans are eating fattening food because that is all they have access to is nonsense. People eat fattening food because it tastes good. Fat and sugar taste good.
I’ll give you a penny for your thoughts if you’ll reimburse me for my 2 cents’ worth on the same subject.
