Fool Kansans once, shame on you. Try to fool us three times, and you must be shameless. But that’s what Lt. Gov. Jeff Colyer and the Brownback campaign attempted in moving the same $500,000 loan in and out of the campaign multiple times. Colyer first loaned the campaign the money on Dec. 31, right before a campaign finance filing deadline. He was repaid by Jan. 2. Then he did it again immediately before the July filing deadline, with the money repaid two days later. Colyer loaned the $500,000 a third time on Aug. 13, according to new finance reports released this week. In each reporting period, the recycled loan enabled the campaign to appear to match the fundraising totals of Democratic gubernatorial candidate Paul Davis. Libertarian candidate Keen Umbehr described it best, calling the process of putting the loan in and then taking it out the “Colyer Hokey Pokey.” – Phillip Brownlee
