Congratulations to Michael Scholes on being named Sedgwick County manager Wednesday, having risen above 84 other applicants and three other finalists to win the confidence of the County Commission. His credentials certainly are impressive, including most recently managing staff from more than 30 countries at NATO headquarters in Pristina, Kosovo’s capital city. What’s unknown is how well his vast, worldly military career has prepared him to manage a large county in Kansas. Because county commissioners saw no need to allow the public to meet and interact with the manager finalists and Scholes gave no media interviews, all but seven citizens who served on a community panel only know Scholes from his resume and must blindly trust in the decision. Verification will have to wait until after Scholes starts work no later than Nov. 15. Scholes will succeed County Manager William Buchanan, who retired in June – and who came to Sedgwick County in 1991 with 20 years of experience in public administration, including three city manager stints. – Rhonda Holman
