Terry Lee Loewen has seemed a pathetic figure since his shocking 2013 arrest, which was on the brink of what he believed was a suicide bomb attack on then-Wichita Mid-Continent Airport. On Monday, his early attempts to prove entrapment having failed and a plea deal having been struck, the 60-year-old former avionics technician learned his sentence of 20 years in federal prison for one count of attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction. Now Loewen becomes a warning to any other dangerously misguided Americans fantasizing about joining jihadis – that their online outreach to so-called terrorists may have an audience at the FBI. Praise is due the investigators and prosecutors who built Loewen’s case, which brought the frightening prospect of domestic terrorism home for Wichita. – Rhonda Holman
