Big surprise: Kobach backs Trump’s immigration policies

Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach agrees with GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump’s proposals to build a wall along the southern border and end “birthright citizenship” for children born to parents who are in the U.S. illegally, Associated Press reported. Most political observers and legal scholars dismiss both proposals as impractical, given the high cost and difficulty of building a wall and the extreme unlikelihood of revoking the 14th Amendment of the Constitution. GOP leaders and the other presidential candidates also fear that Trump’s policies and inflammatory rhetoric will hurt the eventual GOP nominee in the general election, but Kobach argues that Trump’s immigration stance would appeal to independents. Kobach advised Mitt Romney to support a policy of “self-deportation” during the 2012 presidential campaign – a stance that Romney’s campaign and party officials later regretted and cited as why he received only 27 percent of the Latino vote. – Phillip Brownlee
