Could Pompeo be GOP’s 18th presidential candidate?

Rep. Mike Pompeo, R-Wichita, for president? The conservative hawk who has represented the 4th Congressional District since 2011 was mentioned in a Weekly Standard piece by William Kristol pondering whether the lesson of Donald Trump’s popularity “is that the rest of the field isn’t what it should be.” Suggesting “one or two new and potentially superior candidates” might make a nice “October surprise,” Kristol expressed interest in former Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels, Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan, Arkansas Sen. Tom Cotton, Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito and retired Gen. Jack Keane. And Kristol wrote: “The House also features young but tested leaders like Jim Jordan, Trey Gowdy and Mike Pompeo.” When asked by The Eagle editorial board to respond, Pompeo e-mailed that he was flattered and joked that he would have to figure out how to get Wichita State University basketball coach Gregg Marshall to agree to be his running mate. – Rhonda Holman
