It’s disappointing that Democratic gubernatorial candidate Paul Davis is so wishy-washy on same-sex marriage – telling The Eagle editorial board that he doesn’t have a strong personal opinion and doesn’t want to use his political capital on a divisive issue. But Davis was correct in noting during a debate Monday that there isn’t much a governor can do – despite Gov. Sam Brownback’s vow at a Wichita rally Saturday to fight to protect the state’s marriage ban. “The fact of the matter is that at this particular time there is nothing I can do, there is nothing Gov. Brownback can do to impact this issue,” Davis said. “It is in the court system.” And if the court rules, as seems inevitable, that Kansas’ marriage ban in unconstitutional, it won’t matter what the governor thinks. – Phillip Brownlee
