Opinion Line (Aug. 5)

President Obama’s Clean Power Plan will clean out your wallet. But by that time he will be raking in millions for speaking. Besides, his legacy is far more important to him than whether you can afford his major increases in energy costs.


When it comes to the Republicans endlessly criticizing Obama on the Iran nuke deal, all they are saying is “give war a chance.”


A black man allegedly shot a white cop during a traffic stop in Memphis. When can we expect Obama, Al Sharpton and Loretta Lynch to travel to Memphis and express outrage?


Will the gun lobby support African-Americans arming themselves specifically to protect themselves against white cops?


The Louisiana movie theater shooter committed his dastardly crime in a posted gun-free zone. When will people learn that criminals seek out gun-free zones?


I’ve been having this recurring nightmare in which Congress, the Kansas governor’s mansion, the Kansas Senate and House, and the Sedgwick County Commission have all been overtaken by nitwits. Thank God it’s only a nightmare, right? It is, isn’t it?


If proposed noncritical county budget cuts are that big a deal to you, form an organization and fund it yourself. I don’t want to pay for it.


By a wide margin, the voters elected the majority county commissioners into office because of their promises to reduce spending and be fiscally responsible. It looks to me like they are just doing what they were elected to do by the people. Good job.


If the mandate for the Sedgwick County commissioners is to do as little as possible for the county, they are fulfilling it.


When journalists are invited to a big Koch political fundraising meeting under the condition they cannot reveal any of the big donors there without the person’s permission, obviously journalism has been bought and democracy is the loser.


Thank you to all the volunteers and the people who provided school supplies, food and shoes for Convoy of Hope. You helped my neighbor, who is waiting for a kidney transplant, by providing for her three children.


The redesign of The Eagle’s obituaries is wonderful. It was long past due. The designer needs to be commended. It makes a very sad thing pleasant to the read.


Two things you will never see: A unicorn. The Sonic boys actually taking a bite of the hot dogs.
