Dole blames dysfunction on lost art of friendship
During a rare visit to Capitol Hill last week to help celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, former Kansas Sen. Bob Dole said one reason for the current gridlock and dysfunction in Washington, D.C., is the lost art of friendship, reported Dana Milbank of the Washington Post. “We were D’s and R’s, but beyond that we were friends,” he recalled of his time in Congress. “We worked together because it was the right thing to do.” Dole also spoke with disdain of the 50-odd Republican House members (who include Rep. Tim Huelskamp, R-Hutchinson/Fowler) who refuse to compromise on anything: “I don’t know what they are.” – Phillip Brownlee
