Umbehr stands out in support of same-sex marriage

Of the three candidates running for governor, only Libertarian Keen Umbehr is openly supporting the right for same-sex couples to get married. Gov. Sam Brownback says he will fight against same-sex marriage, and Democrat Paul Davis says he wants to focus on other issues. Umbehr said in a statement that “marriage is a fundamental right for opposite and same-sex couples alike.” He contends that the liberties and protections provided in the U.S. Constitution must apply to everyone, even if they conflict with religious beliefs. “That is what a constitutional conservative embraces,” he said. – Phillip Brownlee
