Opinion Line (July 17)

Looking at the close-up pictures of Pluto by NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft reminds us of how great our space program used to be. Sad.

How ironic that as soon as we get to Pluto, the Lake Afton Observatory will close. I know there are many who think space exploration is tax money ill spent, but I would rather my taxes be spent exploring the universe than wasted on one more war.

With the GOP and the radical right wanting nothing short of war in Iran, the Defense Department should be renamed the War Department, its former name.

The chaos unfolding in Greece is nature’s endpoint for liberal, progressive socialism. The idea is to spend and borrow until the economy collapses. Then a new constitution and government can be implemented. America is headed down the same path.

The KNEA president said that “having an untrained teacher in the classroom is not good for our kids.” Really? How are these homeschooled kids outscoring a lot of the public school kids when tested? I’m sure most of the homeschoolers don’t have a licensed teacher.

Let’s staff the governor’s plane with an unlicensed pilot.

Kansas has become Bedford Falls if George Bailey had never been born. Sadly, there is no happy ending. This tragedy that didn’t need to happen will affect the state and our lives for many years.

How can the state be short on money when we have three casinos? Maybe someone could explain to taxpayers where all those millions are going.

Hey, fellow Christians. Better start memorizing Scripture now, because after the progressives get the guns they will come after the Bibles. They hate that book.

Bad guys from around the world enter Mexico to learn how to pass as Mexican. If they ran across the border together carrying weapons and wearing camo, would you care to stop them? Sneaking through a few at a time with others with good intentions isn’t any safer for us.

African-Americans have not been the only people to be slaves. Almost every race throughout the history has been slaves once. Know your history. Educate yourselves. The Confederate flag should not offend you; our history should.

Wednesday’s front page had an article stating that 29 percent of Kansans are too fat for the military. Page 9A of that same paper had a recipe for a pie that has 953 calories per slice. I love The Eagle’s sense of humor.
