Opinion Line (July 10)

Government officials take an oath to uphold the law. If a government employee has religious convictions that do not allow him to serve all citizens under the law, then he should not have his position. This includes governors.

So let me get this straight (pun intended): Kathleen Sebelius issues an executive order protecting LGBT state workers and she is overstepping her power. Sam Brownback issues an executive order restricting LGBT rights and opening the door for discrimination, and it’s religious freedom.

If the president issues an executive order, the Republicans howl. If Brownback does it, he’s protecting our religious rights. What a hypocrite. Thank the Lord (ironic?) he can’t run for governor again.

It isn’t a Greek tragedy in the classic art form, but a generation of bad economic decisions made to garner votes. America is on the same very slippery economic slope – spending money we don’t have for short-term political gain and wasteful, crony-related projects of no value to the economy.

Donald Trump is simply a pawn of the GOP, playing bad cop so the other Republicans seeking the presidency can appear to play the good cop.

I saw an accident at 21st and Maize involving funeral escorts blazing into the intersection, with lights flashing and sirens blaring, acting like they are real police. It’s time to get rid of these oftentimes careless escorts.
