Limited troop reduction in Kansas is good news

The announcement Thursday that Ft. Riley will lose 615 troops and Ft. Leavenworth will lose 60 troops would not normally be considered good news. But given the size of troop cuts nationwide, the relatively small reduction in Kansas is a relief, though still painful. “Kansas cuts amount to less than 2 percent of the overall national reduction, reflecting the valuable role both forts serve for the Army and national security,” Sen. Pat Roberts, R-Kan., said in a statement. Gov. Sam Brownback also was relieved: “The limited reductions to the Kansas Army installations are a credit to the remarkable commitment of local communities and those serving on our Kansas installations.” – Phillip Brownlee
