First-term Sen. Jerry Moran, R-Kan., was not the obvious choice to chair the National Republican Senatorial Committee for this election cycle, Politico reported, but “GOP candidates have thus far avoided campaign-losing gaffes and Republican fundraising is on track to set new records.” And if the GOP retakes the Senate, which remains a real possibility, Moran will get a lot of the credit. “I told Jerry if we get the majority, he’s going to look like a genius,” said Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas. As Politico noted, “Moran’s NRSC role could fuel a primary challenge in 2016 from disaffected tea party Republicans.” But Moran said that “what happens in 2014 could be politically helpful to Republican candidates, including me in ’16. I would feel more comfortable talking to Kansas voters in the new year with the opportunity to say, ‘I’ve actually got an amendment. It’s going to be voted on this week, and I’m working hard.’” – Rhonda Holman
