Former Wichita Democratic Rep. Dan Glickman is calling on Congress to make Corporation for National and Community Service programs such as AmeriCorps a bipartisan priority. In a Kansas City Star commentary, Glickman wrote: “Our nation needs to rededicate itself to the merit of service to re-engage the next generation. Imagine a country where all young Americans completed a year of some type of service. Imagine how this could dramatically alter the pipeline of individuals interested in service and how it could alter perceptions about those who serve.” Glickman, now a senior fellow at the Bipartisan Policy Center, is right about the cutbacks; between 2010 and 2013, Congress cut the CNCS programs by 13 percent, and a House panel recently approved another 34 percent cut. – Rhonda Holman
