Kansas delegation realizes importance of trade

President Obama may soon receive the trade promotion authority he needs to negotiate a Pacific Rim trade deal. The U.S. House approved the fast-track authority last week, with all four of Kansas’ representatives voting for it. The Senate, which first approved the authority last month (Kansas GOP Sens. Pat Roberts and Jerry Moran voted for it), is scheduled to revisit the issue this week. The Kansas delegation recognizes the importance of trade to the Kansas economy, particularly agriculture and manufacturing. A Trans Pacific Partnership trade agreement, which Congress would have to approve, should help open and expand trade markets for Kansas products. – Phillip Brownlee
