Eisenhower memorial takes key step forward
It’s great that the National Capital Planning Commission gave first-stage approval this week to a revised design for the planned national memorial for President Dwight D. Eisenhower. The memorial, which will be across the street from the National Air and Space Museum on the National Mall, has been held up because of criticism, including by some members of the Eisenhower family, that it wasn’t classical in design and that it overemphasized Eisenhower’s boyhood roots in Kansas. Those critics still aren’t happy, but the new design made some good compromises. Now it needs final approval from the commission and strong support in Congress. Get it done. – Phillip Brownlee
