The cost of the overtime legislative session may not quite be $1 million, as reported, because about 20 percent of lawmakers are turning down part of their extra pay. Thirty-six lawmakers – including Sens. Les Donovan, R-Wichita; Carolyn McGinn, R-Sedgwick; and Ty Masterson, R-Andover; and Reps. Mark Kahrs, R-Wichita; and Carolyn Bridges, D-Wichita – filled out paperwork to turn down all or part of their daily salary of $88 and $129 per day for expenses, the Topeka Capital-Journal reported. Donovan was the only senator to turn down all of his overtime compensation. “I’m ashamed to be associated with a group that won’t act any better than this,” he said. “This is crazy.” – Phillip Brownlee
