Opinion Line (June 1)

As an old conservative, I’m not much into women’s lib, but when I read that Gloria Steinem and others were able to go by bus across the DMZ, for me it was a refreshing example of positive American diplomacy.

When will people start remembering Korea? Most jump straight from World War II to Vietnam. Thank you, Boeing, for remembering the Chosin Reservoir in your Memorial Day advertisement.

My old employer had a full-page ad in recognition of the veterans on Memorial Day. My present employer and some other companies appear to have forgotten the sacrifice of the men and women who made it possible for them to prosper and cash their millions in stock options.

Show some patriotism, people. Every holiday I put out my American flag. It’s always the only one flying in my upper-class golf club community. I’m probably the only liberal Democrat in the neighborhood, too. Has everyone else forgotten that our kids are fighting and dying for us in a war?

If I wanted to gamble, it would not be at a state-owned casino. The Indians were here first and deserve every dime they receive from their casinos.

The problem in Waco was gangs. Where are the Untouchables when you need them to rid the world of more garbage? Gangs should be treated like the mob – illegal to belong to, and lock up those who do.

The governor’s foolheartedness has Kansas headed down an economic rough road that will result in Kansans having to travel on actual rough roads.

You say democracy is broken in Kansas? I’m glad. It was never supposed to be a democracy. We’re a republic.

Employers: We are worn out by your threats and “just because I said so” attitude and actions. Be transparent, work hard and be nice to people, and we will be loyal to you. Also, hire more people. We cannot do what two or three people are needed to do.

To the talking heads on TV: Tacking on the suffix phrase “if you will” onto easy-to-understand terms and phrases does not make it seem that you’re explaining something complicated, and certainly doesn’t make you sound intelligent. It’s quite the opposite effect.

Gene Stephenson at his worst was still better than what Todd Butler has been for WSU baseball. Such a shame to see so few fans these days with such a beautiful stadium.

Before you get a dog or cat, think beyond the time when they are cute as babies. It saddens me when people get rid of their pets because it isn’t convenient anymore.
