Opinion Line (Sept. 23)

What do my teenage daughter and Wichita City Council have in common? Both want more money from me but won’t tell me how they really plan on spending it.

There is not a public transit system in the country that is self-sustaining. A public transit system makes a city livable and attractive. Without a good public transit system, you get a one-horse town like Wichita.

Remember that time-limited statewide sales tax that ended up not being reduced as much as promised? Never trust a politician with your money. It is way too easy to spend someone else’s money and change the rules as you go.

Paul Davis reportedly was discovered by police in 1998 enjoying a lap dance in a club known as a distribution center for illicit drugs. He passes it off with the “wrong place,” “wrong time” cliche. What is the right time and place to enjoy a lewd performance in a drug house?

Wow – I think if Gov. Sam Brownback had been caught in a strip club raid like Davis was, it would be a headline on the top of the front page.

Republican “swift boaters” hit full, fact-twisting stride with a story of an innocent attorney-client meeting that insinuated Davis frequented strip clubs. Obviously Brownback will lose if voters can’t be distracted from what he’s done to our state in recent times.

The story came out to influence your vote – about an occurrence that was 16 years ago. To women: Don’t be concerned, as most of you are married to men who have been to adult clubs.

Lawmakers and the governor finally stop shortchanging contributions to Kansas’ underfunded pension funds while base aid drops on a per-student basis. That per-student aid is the money spent in classrooms. So why do Brownback’s supporters try to count pension makeup payments as “increasing education funding” when it can’t be spent in classrooms? Anyone, class?

Wonder if Secretary of State Kris Kobach works as hard at his other duties as he does disenfranchising voters and promoting the GOP agenda.

Reason for modern-day voter apathy: When a jerk wearing a robe can overturn the vote of the people, what’s the point of voting?

When can we expect Chad Taylor to announce his resignation from the Shawnee County District Attorney’s office, since he has declared himself incapable of fulfilling the duties of elected office? Don’t hold your breath.
