Davis surely knew 1998 strip club incident would be unearthed

An October surprise arrived early for Democratic gubernatorial candidate Paul Davis, who should have known that his presence at a 1998 drug bust at a Coffeyville strip club wouldn’t stay forgotten amid this heated campaign. Voters can decide whether they are satisfied with Davis’ “wrong place at the wrong time” explanation of why he, a then-unmarried 26-year-old attorney who represented the club’s owner, was discovered in a back room with a woman wearing only a G-string, according to county sheriff’s records first reported by the Coffeyville Journal. Some may agree with Republican backers of Gov. Sam Brownback that the incident, which occurred when Davis was a private citizen and resulted in no arrest, somehow makes the Democrat unfit to be governor 16 years later. But the GOP is sure slinging some old mud here. – Rhonda Holman
