Don’t count on Sedgwick County to keep promises

Sedgwick County commissioners heard an impressive outpouring of support Wednesday for strong continued county funding for the Sedgwick County Zoo, Exploration Place and the Greater Wichita Economic Development Coalition. But as the commission majority voted to give itself until Sept. 1 to make decisions on future support for those organizations, the clear and troubling message was what Commissioner Jim Howell recently told The Eagle: “There are no promises to anybody right now. Everything’s on the table.” These and 14 other entities being put on notice that they may receive less help from the county in 2016 should be very concerned, as should their community supporters. As Commissioner Tim Norton said Wednesday in being the sole vote against the move, the county should find a way to honor its partnerships and commitments now, just as it has in past challenging times. – Rhonda Holman
