KanCare insurers still bleeding money

The three insurance companies that manage KanCare, the state’s privatized Medicaid program, lost $110 million last year and may be headed for an even bigger loss this year. In the first half of 2014, the companies lost $72.6 million, the Kansas Health Institute News Service reported. That’s raising concerns about the sustainability of the program and what the insurance companies might do to curb their losses – such as denying and delaying payments to hospitals and other providers. “These companies can’t keep subsidizing Medicaid to the tune of $100 or $150 million per year,” said Rep. Jim Ward, D-Wichita. – Phillip Brownlee
