GOP grip on Roberts’ Senate seat goes back 96 years
When it comes to which seats Republicans have held onto the longest in the U.S. Senate, Kansas claims the first and second spots, according to the Washington Post. The GOP has owned the seats currently claimed by Pat Roberts and Jerry Moran for 96 and 76 years, respectively. But two other seats have been in Democratic hands longer: Louisiana Sen. Mary Landrieu’s (132 years) and Montana Sen. John Walsh’s (102). Polls show Roberts at risk of being unseated by independent Greg Orman, and as the Post noted, “Walsh’s seat will almost certainly flip this year; Landrieu will be lucky to hold hers.” It’s more usual for parties to hold U.S. Senate seats for two decades or so. – Rhonda Holman
